TPP heard the song “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers earlier today and figured it would make a good topic to ponder on.
For those of you who do not know the song it is about two strangers on a train who start a conversation. One of the strangers is a gambler and the other appears to be down on his luck. So the gambler offers to give the other some advice in exchange for the last of the whiskey that the other has.
The advice given goes as follows:
“You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em,
Know when to walk away, and know when to run.
You never count your money when you’re sittin’ at the table.
There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealing’s done.”
It appears that the song is about playing cards, or gambling more specifically, but it can be related to all parts of your life. In fact, the song writer Don Schlitz insisted that the lyrics of this song are more related to life than it is to gambling and is related to the advice his late father gave him.
So your homework from here is to ponder on the chorus lyrics above and how they may relate to your life, what is happening in it currently or what happened the past. What is good that you should concentrate on and be grateful for, or what are you holding onto that you should let go of. But you can also go in a completely direction with this, in how do these lyrics relate to actually playing cards – pondering can go in many directions!
