Your Best Foot Forward

Continuing on the toe theme from the last article, TPP’s (The Pondering Paw’s) subject for today is feet.

Your feet are a great engineering design with 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments that work tireless every day to support your entire body. They also have approximately 250,000 sweat glands – in fact feet contain more sweat glands and sensitive nerve endings per square centimetre than any other part of your body!

But today we are not going to focus on the technical facts about feet, instead a few random fun facts to really stretch your pondering mind.

Here we go:

Ticklish feet?
With somewhere around 8,000 nerve endings in your foot, many of which are close to the skin, it is not surprising they are so sensitive to being tickled. In fact your feet are one of the most ticklish part or your body, along with under your arms.

Distance Walked
One study found that adults each typically walked 6,839 steps every day or 2,496,234 a year. This means that average adult will walk the equivalent of three times around the world during their lifetime.

Growth Speed
When we are born our feet are underdeveloped, soft and flexible. The they starts to grow and boy once started do they grow quickly – in fact the greatest foot growth happens in the first three years of your life, where your feet will grow up to nine sizes and develop arches.

Hot and Sweaty Feet?
As mentioned above, there are approximately 250,000 sweat glands in your feet, so it is not surprising to find out that your foot is capable of producing a cup of sweat a day. Two further fun facts about feet sweating are, a child’s foot sweat more than twice as much as adult feet, and, it is all that sweat that weakens shoes so a child’s shoe breaks down faster than adult shoes.
