The Pondering Paw Fasting

To Fast or Not To Fast

In the last article TPP pondered on the weird word mukbang and what it means – the super quick version… someone who live-streams themselves eating food (generally lots of it) and others watch them do this!

This next article is almost the total opposite – in recent times TPP has been reading many articles about intermittent fasting and it’s benefits, both for overall health and weight related.

A quick overview about intermittent fasting, for those of you who have never heard if it… it basically an eating pattern that cycles between periods of eating and purposefully not eating by skipping meals for a set period of time i.e not eating for 12, 16, 18 or 24 hours. The premise is that you focus on when you eat, rather than what you eat.

For TPP weight is not an issue, but the health benefits appear to be too great to ignore, so after much humming and harring TPP finally decided to give it a go!

The first attempt was something to ease into it gently – eat nothing after dinner, then make the next meal lunch the following day. This meant roughly not eating for 16 hours for TPP. Simple plan, but gosh, did the morning feel like a lifetime and many distractions were created to not think about missing breakfast, morning tea. There were even a number of absentminded walks to the fridge, just to see what there was to eat. That said TPP made it to lunch without eating anything!

Now TPP knows it was really only one meal missed, so not really anything amazing, but still it felt like a HUGE achievement!

In all honesty, other than the feeling the achievement, TPP did not notice any of the other perceived benefits that everyone talks about. But that may be because being the first time fasting the focus was more on missing breakfast, morning tea and being hungry.

Will TPP try fasting again… yes – more because of the challenge and feeling of achievement, rather than the health benefits but it will be interesting to track over time if the benefits that they walk about kick in.

Your homework today is to ponder on the concept of intermittent fasting – is it something you have tried, if so how did it go and what benefits came from it for you? If not, would you consider trying it?

Ponder away!
