Today, while reading a fiction novel, TPP came across a weird word that TPP had never heard or seen before. The word was mukbang… yeah, not surprised if you have not heard or seen it before either!
Because it was such a weird word to come across (especially for a book that was set in Hawaii) the first reaction was pull out the ole phone, open a browser and do a search to find out more.
The results of what the word mukbang means were almost as weird at the word itself – so much so,that TPP’s initial reaction was “Is this even a real thing???”.
The word, pronounced “mook-bong”, originated from South Korea and translates roughly to “eating broadcast”.
Simply put, mukbang is where someone live-streams video of themselves eating food – generally large quantities of food in one sitting. During the broadcast the person eating will casually chat to the audience, make lots of eating noises and some will even answer questions put to them during the session.
What is also interesting about this activity is that some of the people who are mukbang creators make a lot of money doing so!
