Caterpillar Eyes

How Many You Ask?

Recently TPP had a quiz asking “How many eyes does a caterpillar have?“. This quiz came about when looking for a topic to get your pondering gears going, along with seeing a previous quiz about ostrich eyes, it felt like the perfect topic. Plus, TPP did not know the answer, so a few hours were lost researching caterpillars, their eyes and all things caterpillar!

For those of you who have not completed the quiz or have no idea, the answer to the “How many eyes does a caterpillar have?” question is 12 – although a few breeds have between 10 and fourteen.

The thing about caterpillar eyes is that they do not see the same as we do – they do not see images, rather their eyes are more light sensors that distinguish between light and dark, change in light intensity and register movement. Here is a great link to an article covering caterpillar eye facts way better than TPP could ever do!

Your homework today is ponder on what it would be like to be a caterpillar with 12 eyes but only able to fundamentally see light and dark or movement.

Ponder away!
