Today while out and about, TPP overheard part of a conversation between a mother and her young son (he was somewhere around 5 or 6) while passing by the two of them.
It went like this:
Mum: “What were you thinking when you did that?” in a lightly scolding tone of voice
Son: “Dunno, just thought it would be fun” as he looked up to her sheepishly
Mum: “Well you know what thought, thought – he thought he had his leg out of bed, so he got out to put it back in”
Son: “Huh?” looking confused
TPP had moved past them before hearing her reply to the confused young lad and before the detail of the conversation sunk in to stop and listen further. So TPP has no idea where the conversation went next, but would be very interested to know.
The TPP had never heard the saying “You know what thought, thought…” but was very intrigued by it. So much so, that when back in front of a browser TPP had to look up to see if there was actually any reasoning to it. This is what came up…
Because thought didn’t do anything but just thought, the saying translates to not assume certain things and check to be sure not to make mistakes from the assumption. An example of context given was – pointing out the futility of thinking that something has been done without actually going to check that it has indeed been done.
Another reasoning about the saying was that it can be used as a way of telling someone to “shut up” when they have made a stupid mistake – along the lines of, thought thought but didn’t know anything practically so what you saying does not make sense and is stupid.
Your homework today is ponder on the saying “You know what thought, thought – he thought he had his leg out of bed, so got out to put it back in” and what means to you, any of the above or something totally different?
