Most of us have heard the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This has been around for many years – they say it came from the 19th century. With all of the goodies in an apple, such as Vitamin C and phenols, it is not surprising the saying came about.
But today, TPP (the Pondering Paw) is more focused on the goodies you get mentally from the act of eating the apple and not the nutritional value.
There is nothing like that sound that comes from taking a bite of a nice ripe crispy apple. Then there is crunching sound when chewing on that bite, let alone all the juice that comes with that bite. It is a very satisfying thing for the soul – the sound, the flavour, the sweetness or tartness depending on the variety and the satisfaction of knowing you are eating something that is good for you.
Unless you are totally in the moment and concentrating only on the eating of your apple this all happens sub-consciously. The act of eating a nice ripe crispy apple does a lot for the body both mentally and physically without you ever realising it.
A floury apple is a totally different experience and does not give the same satisfaction!
Talking of the enjoyment of eating an apple, have you ever watched a horse or a donkey eat an apple? They start “slobbering” apple juice everywhere and the look on their face is one of absolute pleasure.
So today’s homework is to totally “be in the moment” when you eat that apple. Ponder on the taste, texture, sound and the enjoyment you are getting out of eating the apple. Now if you don’t like apples, that’s fine, try the exercise with a piece or fruit that you do enjoy. The idea it to understand the simple pleasure of eating something tasty.
Ponder away!
