This morning TPP woke around 5am and looked out the bedroom window to see an amazing orange moon – never seen one like it before.
Now, maybe living in the country made the scene look even better as there was no urban lighting to spoil it, but no matter what, it was truly a site to behold!
After looking at it in wonder for a wee while TPP went back to sleep. On waking, the memory of how amazing the orange moon was, and never having seen one like it, TPP decided to find out more about what is an orange moon and why do they occur.
There are three main things that came out about an orange moon:
- They occur when the moon is close to the horizon. The atmosphere closer to earth is thicker and only long wavelengths reach your eyes – these long wavelengths consists of red, orange and yellow colours (short wavelengths being blue, green and violet)
- These are most likely to occur close to the first day of summer or autumn
- It can be caused by wildfire smoke or pollution

Your homework for today is to ponder on the range of different coloured moons you have seen and how incredible they are.
