So today’s topic is quite a random one… did you know that an ostrich’s eyes are bigger than their brains? Yip, absolutely true, their eyes are about the size of a pool ball. Plus they have the biggest eye of any bird!
As most things there is a purpose or reason for the big eyes that ostrich’s have – it gives them amazing eye site. This allows an ostrich to see things over a long distance, which is a great asset out in the wild… the ability to spot trouble long before it arrives.

Overall, birds tend to have smaller brains than mammals of a similar size, hence the expression we mentioned in the introduction (the insult “bird brain”). But does the ostrich have an unusually small brain or just extra-large eyes?
A study from 2008 did suggest that an ostrich’s brain is slightly underdeveloped as compared to the brains of a duck, goose, and stork. Ostrich brains are about 1.5 inches wide, according to the study. They are also about 17 times lighter than the brains of the three other species on average.
